What Is a Lobola Negotiation Letter?

A lobola negotiation letter is a respectful written request for both families to meet. It should not try to settle the full negotiation inside the letter. Instead, it should open the process and allow elders or family representatives to discuss details properly.

The letter is normally sent before the negotiation day. It can be delivered by a family representative, uncle, elder brother, parent or trusted relative.

We greet you with humility and respect.

We, the Dlamini family, would like to request a formal meeting with your family to discuss the customary marriage process between our son, Sibusiso Dlamini, and your daughter, Naledi Mokoena.

Our intention is to approach your family in a respectful manner and to allow both families to meet, introduce themselves and discuss the next steps according to family values and custom.

We kindly propose Saturday, 8 August 2026, as a possible date for the meeting. If this date is not suitable, we would appreciate your guidance on a date and time that works best for your family.

We also kindly ask that you advise us of the appropriate representatives to contact regarding the meeting arrangements.
